MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH - Part 2

Breaking the Stigma of Therapy

What is Mental Health?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration established “Mental Health Awareness Month in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness.” (SAMHSA website)

Mental health affects how we handle stress, think,  act, and make choices. One’s mental health is important at all stages of life - from early childhood to older adult. We face different challenges at each life stage.

Therapy

Mental Health impacts us all - emotionally, socially and psychologically. Therapy addresses all of these areas. For many, therapy is a vulnerable experience. As therapists, we work to break down the stigma of seeking treatment.

Entering therapy can be intimidating and many individuals feel afraid of the process. Most clients enter treatment at a time of crisis in their lives, however, the ultimate goal is for clients to enter therapy before a crisis has occurred. Mental health awareness month is the perfect opportunity to continue to break down the stigma of therapy.

Therapists work with their clients to teach them how to build a foundation of healthy coping skills. When clients are discharged from care, they are ready to use these skills for a lifetime. Using our voice to normalize therapy, we hope more individuals will feel comfortable seeking treatment and ultimately feel better.

At Martin Wellness Group, we treat each client as an individual. We match all clients with the perfect provider to help them reach their goals. Interested in learning more about the process of therapy and/or finding the right provider? Learn more here!
