BABYWEARING IN THE WINTER

How to keep you and baby safe and warm this winter

Whether you’re an experienced babywearer or completely new to it, carrying your baby outside in the cold New England winter can be a challenge. Here are some handy tips and tricks to help make it a little easier.

Count Your Layers

Generally speaking, the baby should be in one layer more than you are. Remember the carrier or sling itself is a layer!

Avoid Snowsuits

Snowsuits make it difficult to check whether a baby is overheating as they’re so far away from you. Also they are bulky which makes it harder to put them in an ergonomically friendly position in the carrier.

Start with Indoor Clothes

Start with both of you wearing what you would typically wear indoors. Then add layers over both of you. Why? When you get to your destination it’s easier then to take off the additional layers, especially if the baby is sleeping which they often do when they’re cozy! Use big cardigans, borrow partner’s clothing, maybe even maternity clothing can get a second use.

Babywearing Covers

You can use a baby blanket tucked into the top of the carrier for an extra layer and then zip up your coat as far as it’ll go. Alternatives are specially designed babywearing covers like a Bundlebean. They are waterproof and can be worn with newborns to preschoolers and by others. If you carry a lot, consider investing in a babywearing coat. I love my Mamalila coat which has panels that zip in meaning when you’re not carrying it is a waterproof jacket (it also doubles up as a maternity coat!)

Protect Their Extremities

This is any part not covered by the sling - think heads and legs. A hat for their head is simple enough. Legs you can use adult fluffy socks (turn them around so the heels become the knees) or if you’re crafty (or know someone who is) you can knit some baby leg warmers!

If you have any questions or would like to get some more babywearing advice please come along to the monthly Babywearing Meetups at Relief held on the second Monday of every month at 9:15am. I would love to help!
